State Wildlife Action Plan

As part of a larger, federal effort to develop wildlife conservation strategies for all states and territories, Georgia’s State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) was developed by the Wildlife Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to help address conservation needs of the state’s wildlife species and their habitats. This plan also assists DNR and other organizations in prioritizing conservation efforts based on need and opportunity, resulting in more effective wildlife conservation throughout Georgia.

The planning, development and implementation of this comprehensive wildlife conservation strategy began in 2002 and included an assessment of the state’s wildlife and habitats, an identification of the problems they are facing and an outline of conservation actions needed over an extended period of time. The SWAP development process also included input from public agencies, conservation organizations, research institutions, sportsmen’s groups, educators, local governments and landowners throughout Georgia.

As a result of this preliminary research, Georgia’s SWAP aims to:

  • promote statewide programs for permanent land protection
  • assist private landowners with land management
  • identify and manage invasive species
  • conserve high priority aquatic and wetland habitats
  • educate about the benefits of prescribed fire programs for wildlife habitat restoration and management.

In response to changes occurring in the Georgia landscape as a result of population growth and increasing development pressures, the SWAP is helping conserve wildlife before expensive protections become necessary. The plan also offers specific, immediate steps to improve the state’s knowledge about Georgia’s native species through research and monitoring, thus allowing DNR to take necessary action to protect Georgia’s wildlife before it is too late.

In addition to protecting wildlife and habitats, SWAP is helping to keep Georgia’s natural areas diverse and vibrant. In turn, clean air and water also will be protected, contributing to the wellbeing of Georgia’s wildlife and landscape, as well as the health of Georgia citizens for generations to come.
