Land conservation networking and outreach: Coastal Georgia Land Conservation Initiative (CGLCI) partnership with the Department of Natural Resources and the Association County Commissioners of Georgia to identify critical coastal lands, establish a regional land conservation network and provide education and outreach on land conservation options and sustainable development.
Sustainable land use and development practices: Guiding development in away from sensitive coastal regions and toward areas more suitable for growth while promoting tools such as conservation, restoration, and green building.
Marshlands protection: Providing policy analysis and advocating for strict interpretation of Georgia’s Coastal Marshlands and Shore Protections Acts in order to balance the threat of development along Georgia’s coast.
Stormwater management: Developed guidance documents that protect the vital functions and values of coastal water quality and marshland systems. Advocating for the application of measures that effectively prevent, reduce and mitigate stormwater runoff.
Barrier islands: Working with decision makers to ensure the island’s natural resources are protected and that revitalization efforts employ the most responsible coastal planning and development practices. Protecting the integrity of Jekyll Island through ongoing discussion of redevelopment. Preserving Cumberland’s wilderness by monitoring and communicating concerns on National Park Service activities including transportation planning and retained rights lease issues.
Coastal hazards management: Working with coastal communities and leaders to address ways of discouraging new development in unsuitable areas, and promoting policies and planning that encourage retreat of existing structures from areas at risk from erosion, flood and storm surge damage.
Coastal wildlife habitat protection: Coastal participation in the State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP), developed by the Wildlife Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to help address conservation needs of the state’s wildlife species and their habitats. This plan also assists DNR and other organizations in prioritizing conservation efforts based on need and opportunity, resulting in more effective wildlife conservation throughout Georgia. |
