Protecting Coastal Water Resources

Regional water planning: As part of implementing the Statewide Water Plan, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division has created Regional Water Planning Councils so that stakeholders can participate in evaluating regional needs and forecasts. With no environmental groups represented on the Coastal Planning Council, the Georgia Conservancy is monitoring the process to ensure that the needs of natural systems are incorporated in the discussion.

Coastal water supply alternatives: Promote the implementation of water conservation and efficiency measures, and to monitor other proposals such as desalination and aquifer storage and recovery which potentially pose troubling environmental consequences. Participation as technical advisor on state studies on saltwater intrusion into the freshwater Floridan aquifer, caused by decades of heavy reliance on the Floridan for residential and industrial water needs.

Aquifer recharge protection: Coastal Georgia’s heavy reliance on the Floridan aquifer underscores the need for protection of those areas that are known to provide recharge of the system. Georgia Conservancy promotes awareness among planners and local officials on the coast of the importance of protecting these areas.

The Georgia Conservancy also works to protect water resources state wide. Visit our water program page and the Georgia Conservancy's Water War Room for more information.
