| Periodically, the Georgia Conservancy hosts a conference to bring together engaged citizens, educators, government representatives, and business and industry leaders for an in-depth review of a specific environmental issue. The Common Ground conference usually draws more than 400 attendees and features national and local expert panelists. |
|
| With national and statewide energy issues remaining a serious topic of consideration, Common Ground 07: Advancing Clean Energy Solutions for Georgia focused on energy production and use – both for electricity and for transportation – and the serious impacts they pose for air, water, land, public health and the climate. In a quest to reduce these impacts, businesses, policy makers, universities and other organizations in Georgia are working to develop energy production alternatives and to position Georgia as a leader in the search for cleaner, renewable energy sources. |
| The Common Ground 07 conference educated participants about: |
- environmental impacts of energy production and use
- current issues related to climate change, energy efficiency and renewable energy in Georgia
- methods for individuals, business, industry and government to decrease energy use in their own sectors
|
| This conference, along with keynote speakers Terry Tamminen and Mike Tidwell, also aimed to inspire and motivate Georgia citizens to create a new vision for the state’s energy future. Tamminen, as former chief policy advisor to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, worked to create California’s landmark carbon reduction and trading program. In addition, Tidwell, a native Georgian, is founder and director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network and works to raise awareness about the impacts and solutions associated with global warming. |
