Thank you Georgia Conservancy members and friends! It did not matter if you were a Browncoat or a Trekkie, a Ringer or a Star Wars fan, this is our planet and you made sure that the Georgia Conservancy represented it on a universal stage!
The Georgia Conservancy has now boldly gone where no environmental organization has gone before ... we have been named an official charity of Dragon*Con, the largest multi-media and pop-culture celebration in the Universe! The great distinction also came with a donation of $26,000 to the Georgia Conservancy.
The Conservancy competed alongside four other worthy organizations to be named as an official charity. Voting took place between April 15-28, 2013, and after a tremendous amount of support from friends and fans, the Conservancy finished second place in the voting. We traveled to an Atlanta Braves game dressed as Chewbacca and we bombarded our Facebook friends with sci-fi and fantasy inspired memes - and it paid off.
The festivites didn't stop there! Dragon*Con descended upon downtown Atlanta on Labor Day Weekend 2013 and, as an official charity, the Georgia Conservancy was represented front and center in the galaxy-famous Dragon*Con parade! We were the zombie campers that dragged our legs (some were still attached) and tents down Peachtree Street.
The partnership with Dragon Con has continued into 2014. The Georgia Conservancy recently organized the inaugural service project for Dragon Con Superheroes, a program that gives ‘Con fans an opportunity to give back to the Atlanta community throughout the year.
More than 75 Superheroes turned out for the service project at Sweetwater Creek State Park for 225 combined service hours, installing trail map kiosks, clearing 15 miles of trails and riverside, and cleaning the visitors center.
