Current Issues Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District
back

The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District (the district) was created through Georgia legislation in 2001. The district is the state’s attempt at effectively managing water resources of the Atlanta area on a regional basis. 16 counties: Bartow, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding, Rockdale, and Walton – that lie within six major river basins: Chattahoochee, Coosa/Etowah sub-basin, Flint, Ocmulgee, Oconee, and Tallapoosa – construct the geographic scope of the district.

Upon creation, the district was charged to assist the 16 county region water quality protection and planning for future supplies. The legislation creating the district mandates the completion of three long-term water plans:

  • District-wide watershed management plan
  • Wastewater management plan, and
  • Water supply and water conservation plan.
