Current Issues May Sustainability Tip: Dry Cleaners
back

Dry cleaning operations that use perchloroethylene (PERC) pose a serious risk to the environment. PERC, a liquid, is delivered to dry cleaning operations by truck and is transferred from the truck to on-site storage tanks. Quite often during this transfer, PERC is spilled on the ground outside or on the floor inside a dry cleaners. PERC is a harsh chemical that is dangerous to breathe, and it can easily contaminate the soil and groundwater in the area of the spill. In Georgia, there are literally hundreds of dry cleaner sites that have been contaminated with PERC. “Wet cleaning" provides an alternative that is safer for the environment and health.
