With gas prices high and fluctuating like they are, we are all looking
for a way to save a few dollars at the pump. The tips below will help
improve your gas mileage so you don’t have to fill up quite
as often. |
- Maintain a constant speed, accelerate slowly, and avoid quick stops.
This can improve gas mileage by 33% (highway) and 5% (in town).
- Drive the speed limit on the highway. Each 5 mph over 60 mph decreases
gas mileage by 7-23%.
- Maintain the recommended inflation rate in your tires. Under-inflated
tires reduce fuel economy up to 3%.
- Do not idle your engine longer than one minute. Idling gets 0 mpg,
and starting the vehicle uses the same amount of gas as idling for one
minute.
- Fill up in the early morning or late evening when the gas is densest
and evaporates less as you pump. This has the added benefit of also
decreasing air pollution!
- Keep only necessary items in your vehicle. Each additional 100 pounds
reduces mileage by 2%.
- Air conditioners can reduce fuel economy by 10-20%, so roll down
your windows in stop-and-go traffic. But close the windows at faster
speeds and on the highway, as open windows increase the car’s
air resistance, resulting in higher fuel consumption.
- To find the least expensive gas in your area, don’t drive around
wasting gas. Go to www.gasbuddy.com
to locate a cheaper gas station.
- Combine trips and errands into one instead of retracing your tracks.
- If you’re in the market for a new car, buy a fuel efficient
vehicle. While hybrid vehicles are the most fuel efficient, buying a
more fuel efficient vehicle than you currently own can drastically reduce
your gas consumption. A car that gets 10 more miles to the gallon saves
up to $550 per year! To find out more about fuel efficiency for automobiles,
