Current Issues Halloween Sustainability Tip: Costumes
back

Halloween is a time for disposing of many products: one-use costumes, paper decorations, disposable candy collection containers and of course, all those candy wrappers.

Before heading to the store to purchase a one time use costume, look around your house for materials that you can use to make a costume, such as old clothes or art supplies. Old sheets can become a toga or create a ghost and later can be used as cleaning rags. Old dresses can turn someone into a princess.

If throwing a Halloween party, purchase reusable decorations that can be used in the future as well. Use reusable plates, cups and utensils.

You can’t control your neighbors’ candy purchases, but when selecting your candy giveaway, look for the least amount of packaging and for recycled wrappers.
