Students from Alpharetta, Demorest, Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Milledgeville and Trenton placed in the Georgia Conservancy’s 8th Annual Home Sweet Home Habitat Art Contest by creating original artwork to help increase environmental awareness of Georgia’s rock outcrops. The winning entries were chosen for bright, colorful designs that illustrated the important and valuable ecological function of rock outcrops and the habitats they provide for various species of plants and animals, including fairy shrimp, salamanders and various skinks. This year’s winners included:

  • First place by Ricky Tan, Minor Elementary, Lilburn
  • Second place tie by Alex Barloue, Demorest Elementary, Demorest
  • Second place tie by Abby Smith, Dade Elementary, Trenton
  • Third place by Brent Campbell, Midway Elementary, Milledgeville
  • Fourth place tie by Adrien Buttram, Demorest Elementary, Demorest
  • Fourth place tie by Catherine Fain, Demorest Elementary, Demorest
  • Fifth place tie by Lauryn Burgess, Demorest Elementary, Demorest
  • Fifth place tie by Hope Gehle, Margaret Winn Holt Elementary, Lawrenceville
  • Fifth place tie by Kelsey Johnson, Lake Windward Elementary, Alpharetta

First place winner Ricky Tan was announced in a special presentation at Minor Elementary on May 7. The first-place artwork also was converted into handheld-fans and will appear in upcoming issues of Teaching Conservation, the Georgia Conservancy’s educator newsletter, Panorama, the organization’s quarterly membership magazine, and on the Georgia Conservancy Web site. In addition, the winning artist received a goodie bag filled with fun and educational nature items.
